Head injuries of any kind have the potential to be extremely serious, as they can affect consciousness. Amongst the types of injures to the head that it is possible to sustain are ones to the skull, such as fractures; or internal ones involving the brain or blood vessels. Amongst the potential symptoms suffered as a result of head injuries are concussion, loss of consciousness, and even irreparable brain damage in the worst cases. Anyone suffering a head injury – even one which may appear to be relatively mild – should seek medical attention as soon as possible, as sometimes the underlying seriousness of an injury of this kind is not immediately apparent.

Just as there can be a wide variety of different types of head injury, so there are also a number of different ways in which such injuries can be sustained. Amongst the most common causes of head injuries are falls or motor crashes of any kind. Sometimes, however, internal head injuries – such as brain injuries – can occur as a result of problems during the process of receiving medical care. Brain injuries as a result of medical or clinical negligence can range from ones sustained during a surgical procedure, to ones that arise as a result of the misdiagnosis of symptoms.

There are several ways in which incorrect diagnosis can lead to brain injury. Firstly there are those resulting from the failure to diagnosis existing injuries in this area – such as a tumour or haemorrhage, leading to irreversible damage, or death, when a correct diagnosis may have prevented this outcome. Then there are those cases where a head injury unconnected to the brain is not correctly diagnoses, leading to the problem going on to affect the brain. Finally, there are those brain injuries that result from a surgical procedure going wrong.

Any of these scenarios can potentially lead to a medical negligence claim – of the kind handled by legal representatives such as Patient Lawyers – if there is a strong case for negligence on the part of the hospital, or an individual doctor who was responsible for the treatment.

Your baby’s mind is very precious and is constantly developing during the early stages of their life. This is especially the case during the first few months of their life and their brain is similar to that of a sponge in the sense that they are continuously absorbing everything around them. While their brain expands, they are taking in new tastes, textures and sounds and learning about their scary, exciting new world.

So, the next time you see your little one pulling those adorable faces or looking at an object with wide eyes, know that they are just learning more about their new surroundings while they grow in to a healthy adult. When your child arbitrarily giggles or smiles at many different times of the day, understand that your child is just responding to their new alien world. However, did you know that as a mother you could help advance their brains further by supplying them with mental stimulation?

You can do this by supplying your little child with a baby mat. Soft baby play mats are great implements to help grow their brain. Play mats come in a host of different designs and colours, and help strengthen memory. In my home, my baby mat has different textures and sounds that my little one can interact with and feel. My baby’s mat has small, cosy foam cushions which she loves to snuggle and play with.

I often hear her giggle as she touches the funny textured shapes on her mat. Her mat also has whacky shapes that beep and buzz and are essential for brain development and memory training, as she will remember which shapes have certain textures or make certain sounds.

Baby mats also protect against germs

Any parent will tell you how careful they are with their little ones when it comes to bacteria or germs coming in to contact with them. Because they are young their immune system is very weak as it has not had much interaction with germs. Baby mats are great at providing a protective barrier against any unwanted germs and household bugs that can be found on the floor or surfaces. Rest assured that with a baby mat your little one can rest in total comfort and protection from hard, germ filled surfaces.

Overall, your baby’s mind is very precious and is constantly expanding and developing during the first year of their lives. You can help make sure they get to learn as much as possible by providing them with the mental stimulation they crave as they take their first steps towards learning more about their new environment around them.

Some people with impaired eyesight avoid wearing contact lenses because they don’t want the hassle of looking after them. It is true that some types of contact lenses require quite a lot of attention to make sure that you get the most out of them “ long duration lenses such as monthlies and fortnightlies have to be put away in a sealed container when not in use to make sure that they don’t dry out and can continue to be worn for the entire time period advertised. This can be problematic, especially if you happen to lose one of the lenses and therefore break sync with the intended schedule, breaking into a new pair before you originally planned. It can also mean you’re spending more money than is necessary, which is the last thing anyone wants in today’s economic climate. If you are wanting to compare the cost visit getlenses.co.uk as they have multiple types of lenses.

Daily lenses, however, are entirely disposable and considered cost effective for those who only wear lenses on an occasional basis. Daily lenses can be thrown away after one use so there is no need to worry about where you keep them overnight “ simply take them out and put them in the bin. This also means that losing one lens or accidentally tearing it is no big deal, and you are losing a smaller amount of money rather than the larger sum you would have spent on long duration lenses. Many people also find daily lenses easier to use as they are thinner and easier to manoeuvre in and out of the eye. This thinner width also means that daily lenses will cause less damage if accidentally left in overnight, or if they break in your eye “ whilst thicker lenses could scratch the surface of your eye and cause serious damage, daily lenses will cause slight discomfort and are easy to remove.

Although these benefits of daily lenses all put them in a favourable light, be sure to fully research the other types of lenses before making your choice. Each type of lens has its own advantages and disadvantages, and you want to choose a type that is perfectly suited to you.

With the current financial climate you might have expected that the last thing people want to spend their money on is cosmetic surgery, but you would be wrong.

Figure released by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) at the beginning of the year revealed that the uptake for a number of sol-called vanity procedures is on the rise, with Breast Enlargement surgeries up more than 10 per cent on the previous year and the number of eyelid lifts carried out increasing by seven percent.

So what is it that drives our hunger for these procedures – and why are more and more women putting themselves through the pain of surgery in pursuit of the perfect appearance?

Plastic Surgery Motivation

Some experts argues that the motivation behind plastic surgeries is on that is serious and psychological with women who are bothered by a physical imperfection suffering a lack of confidence as a result – but the truth is that not all surgeries can be down to debilitating confidence issues, otherwise even more procedures would be authorised on the public purse.

Many of the women who are going under the knife are doing so simply because they can, because, given the option between a pert bust and one that belies the children they have born and life they have lived, they are choosing the better looking breasts.

Would they suffer terribly if they did not undergo the procedure? In many cases no, however in a society that tells us we can have whatever we want as long as we can pay for it, surgically enhanced assets are just another consumable.

And it is not all about perfection either – women are seeking the advice and intervention of plastic surgeons, not simply because they believe their natural attributes are under par or unattractive, but because they feel they do not fit in with the latest physical fashions.

Buttock implants, for example, have seen a rise in popularity as the fashion for a particular size and shape of posterior become prevalent, with women who are already sporting perfectly fine behinds seeking a boost in order to be able to fill out and look their best in the latest styles.

Tips for Those Considering Cosmetic Surgery

Whether it is confidence or preference that motivates women to seek out the help of a cosmetic consultant there are a number of things that any woman considering a surgical procedure should take into account before committing to surgery. Steps that should be followed include:

Finding a BAAPS approved surgeon and practice

Researching the procedures, possible complications and long term maintenance of any surgical procedure – you may be able to afford it today, but can you afford to keep it maintained in the long term?

Seeking a consultation with a qualified practitioner rather than just a salesperson before consenting to be cut.

Researching the chosen surgeon’s track record, asking for contacts of previous patients willing the share their experience.

No one considering a cosmetic surgery should feel pressurised into committing and all potential patients should take time to consider the pros and cons before signing that consent form.

The importance of will writing is important for anyone. After all, you never know what lies around the corner. While a lot of people think it’s the least of their family and friends’ worries as to where their estate is divided upon their death, it can actually make proceedings much more stressful after they have passed away.

This is mostly due to wranglings involving burial or cremation costs, as well as other serious technicalities such as property processing, legal fees and anything else involved in the splitting of assets. Most people will happily shrug their last testament off as a simple picking and choosing of where personal tidbits and bric-a-brac will go, but a brief glance at one’s possessions will reveal there is so much more to sort out than that; bank accounts, savings, everything. Now that online wills are becoming the norm for many people wondering how to address this important issue, it seems like there’s no easier way to deal with one’s estate.

It’s easy to see how much turmoil a death can throw people into, especially when it’s so public. The recent passing of Amy Winehouse, the deep contralto singing superstar, underlined how will solicitors were suddenly thrown into action to work with the musician’s huge estate. As family, friends and millions of fans grieved for Amy, it was understood that her assets were somewhere in the region of £10 million, putting her firmly on the Sunday Times Rich List.

Soon after her death, the Daily Mail put forward the notion that probate solicitors had done much of the star’s work as part of her record deal, which was largely governed by Island. While it was understood that her wealth would be divided relatively equally between mother Janis, father Mitch and older brother Alex, it was asserted that her ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil would be entirely cut out of it, as per her demands. Without a redraft, it could have been much different and may have led to explosive tension between those linked with Amy over the years.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, an unnamed close friend of Miss Winehouse underlined how she had finally got her act together following years of drug and alcohol abuse, particularly due to the tumultuous two-year marriage she had to 29-year-old Blake, who is now in prison. Undoubtedly looking back on her representation of large parts of the stormy relationship as told through song on her 2006 smash hit album Back To Black, her friend told the newspaper: “Around the time of the divorce, all of Amy’s finances were sorted out – and Blake can’t get his hands on any of it. I am pretty sure that Amy does have a will. As a matter of course with record contracts, financial advisers will make sure that is done.”

Indeed, legal issues are still proceeding as to the division of Amy’s money, highlighting just how important it could be to have a look at writing wills online. You could save your family a lot of additional heartache by dividing your assets as you see fit, allowing them to remember you for whatever you were – whether that’s a superstar singer, or the man or woman they loved for just being themselves.

It seems that there is just too much money at stake as a total of 100 million pounds is at risk of forfeit. So, the government says that sick people will just have to continue to pay to park, while the patients and their visitors say that it is unfair.

Patients and their families argue that spending this money while receiving life-sustaining treatment is stressful for patients and afflicts them with unnecessary strain as they struggle with other obligations.

Meanwhile, the government argues that not only would the NHS lose the 100 million pounds from removing the charges, but there would also need to be an additional 100 million spent on attending to the parking overhaul. This would be a total loss of 200 million pounds that couldn’t be used on healthcare because it was being used to address parking issues instead.

Where the additional 100 million pounds comes into play is unclear.

Lansley is expected to state that patients have the right to stay in single sex wards outside of the departments of intensive care and Accident and Emergency. Any hospital that misses the deadline that is set by Lansley is expected to be subjected to a high fine.

The newest statistics show that one out of every ten people who end up in the hospital have to stay in mixed wards, while another one out of three are forced to share unisex bathrooms.

The Privacy and Dignity Fund run by the former Labour party was behind improvements that led 95% of all hospitals in the UK to provide single sex accommodation with a fine already in place for those that have not yet confirmed to the standard.

In the past other Labour governments have tried to get the same policy passed but were never able to push it through.

It was Tony Blair who first pledged to end the practice of mixed-sex accommodation in hospitals back in 1996 before he became the Prime Minister, but it was passed on to Gordon Brown whose health minister was forced to state that it was not going to be complete by 2008.

The Shadow Health secretary, Andy Brunham, has spoken out against Lansley stating that he made the announcement in an attempt to claim credit for the hard work of the Labour party in getting the policy on the table.

Botox injections help reduce wrinkles creating a smoother face by relaxing the facial muscles. On average the effects of Botox last for three months, after which time the muscle relaxant effect wears off and the facial muscles start to effectively slouch again.

Botox is best on wrinkles that are the result of facial movement such as frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead wrinkles. The injections on their own do not cause much pain and only take about 15 minutes.

Even better, the effects of Botox are completely reversible and are generally safe. Despite this fact, there are some media reports of people facing bad results from cosmetic treatments so here are the five tips you should consider before picking a Botox clinic to ensure an effective treatment.

First of all, a Botox injection is something that involves skill and should only be performed by a trained practitioner and is best if that person is a doctor.

Second, check the doctor or practitioner that you choose to see if their registration comes with the proper regulatory authority. In the UK this means registration with the General Medical Council, you can even check this online.

Third, before you go under the knife make sure that the doctor has proper insurance cover which will protect you in the case something does not go correctly.

Fourth, you need to know that there are many official clinics that offer Botox treatment, but many other premises now offer them such as hairdressers, salons, and department stores. Before heading to any of these it is very important that you check the credentials.

Fifth, you need to look for signs that the clinics regularly offer treatment on a regular basis, if they do then this is a good sign that they offer effective treatments since their clients return.

A study that took place over the course of 17 years discovered that out of 1,000 elderly people 22% of those that were depressed at the beginning of the study later developed dementia, compared to 17% of those who developed dementia but were not depressed.

However, the study results do not mean that depression is the cause of dementia, and the actual association between the two diseases is not immediately clear. It is still unclear if depression is an actual risk factor, or if it simply may be an early sign of impending cognitive decline. It also potentially could be that changes in the brain are present in both conditions.

Lifestyle factors were also not measured in the study including social interaction, poor diet, and lack of physical activity all of which may increase the risk of dementia and depression. It is also important to note that this study looked at elderly people with an average age of 79 years, which does not clearly link to depression that begins earlier on in life.

The study was performed by researchers from Boston University and the University of Massachusetts both in the United States and was funded by many US medical institutes.

The study mentioned previously began in 1990 with 1,166 study participants out of which 949 were determined to be dementia free at the time of the studies’ beginning.

There are many factors that can cause low back pain. These include excessive riding of two-wheeled vehicles, jerking movements, bad posture and lifting heavy objects.

Some people have a tendency to slouch since it is a comfortable position for relaxing, but such people are more vulnerable to experiencing back pain as a result. Likewise, people who have desk jobs and do not get a great deal of exercise are also prone to this problem.

Slouching is one of the main things that contribute to such pain and because of this; it is a good idea to keep a healthy posture, most especially when sitting down. Exercises can also help to treat low back pain, specifically exercises that stretch the lower back. They are also easy and can be practiced anywhere.

Low back pain is also a cause of excessive flexion thus it is important to make sure that the back is stretched in the right manner and only the correct exercises are practiced. These exercises can help to treat the pain and getting into a more rigid routine of exercise will make it less likely that the back pains will return once you go back to your desk job.

Another popular remedy for back pain is lying down on the front while pulling the chest arm and arching the back by straightening the elbows. During this exercise, hips should be flat on the floor. This exercise gives the back muscles a good stretch and should be done frequently to keep back pain away.

Placing a hot or cold compress on the area of pain can also be an effective method of treating back pains for those less willing to take up exercises. This method helps to relax the muscles and let loose the tension. Cold packs are not as effective but can also be a good relaxant for the muscles. It largely depends on the person’s individual preference whether they use a cold or hot pack.

Massages are also effective in relaxing and stretching the muscles in the area of pain. Finding a trained masseur is a good start and can make the world of difference.

Over-the-counter medicines are often used to get temporary relief from back pain but they are less effective and offer no permanent benefits. If the pain is particularly intense, going to the doctor and seeking a prescription medicine is strongly advisable
